By John Kramer The Greenwich Board of Selectmen joined teens this week to show their support for the Greenwich Youth Conservation Program. The GYCP is a summer work program open to Greenwich teens age 14 and 15, administered by the Town of Department of Human Services and Parks and Recreation. First Selectman Fred Camillo explained, “For the past 46 summers, the Greenwich Youth Conservation Program (GYCP) has provided Greenwich teens with opportunities to contribute to beautification projects, learn teamwork, and to work outdoors.” The program’s mission is, “Teens Working for a Greener Greenwich.” On Tuesday, July 16, the Board of Selectmen, the Department of Human Services and Parks & Recreation joined the Greenwich Youth Conservation Program to plant trees around the corner from the clambake area at Greenwich Tod’s Point. As they say, many hands make light work, and there were 28 teens helping with the project. This is GYCP’s 46th summer. The teens are from all over Greenwich, including middle schools and high schools. At the end of their two weeks of work, they receive a stipend which has been generously donated from different program sponsors as well as private sponsors. Family members and siblings have also participated in past projects. These experiences help teens, the town and the environment. Gaining first-job experience and learning practical employment skills are big draws for GYCP teens. They apply and interview for the positions, wear uniforms, and work in teams with supervisors. Each day, professionals provide training on topics ranging from conservation to writing an effective resume or managing personal finances.
